Must Be April

The student paper at Drexel University reports:

Drexel's chess team has been hit with two years of probation from the NCAA after they learned of recruiting improprieties.

The improprieties have been occurring for at least five years and include providing recruits with access to controlled substances and women.

It's pretty much downhill from there. At least we don't resort to such transparent and silly April Fool's jokes around here.

Talk about bad jokes!

Today, the leader of the Mexican Congress stepped up on the platform and said ceremoniously: "JOHN PAUL II THE POPE HAS PASSED AWAY. WE, AT THE MEXICAN CONGRESS, WOULD LIKE TO GIVE THE WORLD OUR CONDOLENCES, IN ADMIRATION OF SUCH A GREAT FIGURE IN THE WORLD".

At everyone's awe, he returned ten minutes later, and again, in a ceremonious tone, he said: "IT'S A HUMAN THING TO COMMIT MISTAKES. WE OFFER OUR APOLOGIES FOR OUR MISINFORMATION. THE POPE'S CONDITION IS UNSTABLE BUT, FORTUNATELY, HE'S STILL WITH US".

WHAT WAS THIS MAN THINKING???????????? There are rumors that are not confirmed (and will never be, of course), that somebody really nasty played an April Fool's joke on this guy. You can call Kasparov's unretiring thing lame, but at least it was not a KASPAROV IS DEAD rumor.

In an equally strange fashion, two or three days ago, an anonymous computer freak sent the news during the night to 70 media agencies that a Mexican TV host (El Coque Muņiz) had died in a car accident. The report included pics of a crashed car and a guy lying on the floor that looked just like him. I must admit I laughed when I saw in the news a spot where he appears in his show cheerfully stating: I'M ALIVE! However, come to think of it, it's really bizarre to do this. I wonder what the family thought when they saw the news?

Sick humor, eh?

oh please, whores for chessplayers? Some caffeine as handouts as drugs? What was Drexel doing? Running a Crack, Child Porn Ring?

Earth to Bob. It was clearly a humorous piece.

I could see them handing out speed -- or at least ritalin -- and they actually had me going until the " and women" part.
