The "template bug" is as bad as ever. Used to be that a messed-up page was the exception, Now its the norm.

Hint: Check the left side bar of the main page of the Daily Dirt, there you'll see all the recent blog's entries and his last comment.

Going over the games from the K-K matches was one of the major things that fostered my love of chess. People complain about short draws and long matches, but a 40 game or even 24 game match has a flow and a strategy that you don't see over ten or twelve games.

I'd love to see Anand-Topalov over 40 games.

40 seems a bit excessive...24 seems to strike the right balance...

Mig, don't feign ignorance of fashionista mag Men's Vogue. As one of chessdom's leading metrosexuals (you live in Brooklyn and are intentionally bald, for crying out loud), it's clear you're on couture's cutting edge.

The best-dressed player of all time? It's hard to judge sartorial strength across historic eras. For example, Capablanca, though exceptionally well turned out, lacked certain stretch fabrics that Fischer used creatively and decisively. And if Keres had access to a dry cleaner's, maybe he would have been World Champion after all.

Actually, the player with the all time reputation as best-dressed was David Janowski.

where did u get that chesstraveler?

I can't remember the source(s), but I do remember that he had a reputation as as a "dandy" because of it. That was a term that was popular at the time to describe a man that was excessively interested in an elegant appearance.

It must be only the super elite who can really dress well, cos down at the club...(shudder).
But thank god Ivanchuk sets the real trends in top level chess. He would have crushed Janowsky both in chess AND dress.

Ritch, thanks for the hint, and that's what I used to do. But now even the left hand side disappears more often than not.

Chucky and his Real Madrid training top really are on the bleeding edge of haute couture.

On a slightly related note, am I the only one who thinks that chessbase.com is dropping in quality, and chessvibes (or some other site?) may be the best one stop shop for quality chess news?

No, Ashish, you are not the only one. My vote goes to ChessVibes.

and don't forget chessdom.com, those two sites are far better than old clumsy chessbase

@ r: please write more witty comments like that, thanks!

@ Ashish: yes, chessvibes is my favorite these days

@ mig: I enjoyed the K-K matches a lot: so much tension such a high level of chess. The 12-game or 16-game matches of today lack true heroic fights. I'd vote for a return of 24-game matches

The comment link under the Italian game says, "Not Found", and can't post a comment. Not that I have anything important to say. :-(

Chessbase is old-style, one-way Web 1. Blogs are new-style two-way Web 2.
For a bastion of free speech, open debate and quality, unbiased, critical thinking - come here!

And then there's always http://www.susanpolgar.blogspot.com/, presided over by the first woman to ...

Speaking of Susan Polgar, whatever became of the [Paul Truong v Sam Sloan] fake post controversy?

It's still ongoing, in fact a fresh lawsuit was filed against USCF (AND Sloan) just two weeks ago by another "character," who uses the name Ray Gordon. (And duly covered by the Times' Gambit blog.)

The rest of the USCF Executive Board formally asked Truong to resign after he refused to cooperate with the USCF's outside law firm defending against the Sloan suit. But even if he and/or his wife ultimately leave the USCF board (which is far from certain), in my judgment it's unlikely the controversy will hurt the rest of their chess/business lives. Texas Tech, for instance, has shown no sign of backing away from them. And their talks with other chess sponsors and potential sponsors don't seem to be affected, either.

Speaking of nattily dressed chess players, India's Anand and Sasikiran take the cake. Anand changes his stripes more often than a tiger and Sasi was brilliantly dressed during his wedding, just look at his chessbase photos !

Indian chess players are stylish both on and off the board.

Krish,

"Speaking of nattily dressed chess players..."

"Indian chess players are stylish both on and off the board."

Gee, with a handle like Krish, nationalism wouldn't have anything to do with your opinions...would it? =8-)

Indeed chesstraveler, nationalism has nothing to do with krish's comments. He was being as rational and objective as he could be, i.e. very little.

Or maybe krish's idea of 'style' is illustrated by considering Sasikiran and Anand (no disrespect intended) as the pinnacle of fashion.

One of my favorite things about the K-K chess matches (before computers) were the adjournments. I always found them very dramatic. Taking a break in the middle kept the quality of the play higher, and each players team had an increased role in analyzing the end games. Of course computers killed the adjournment. Ah, the good old days.

Hardy Berger,

Perhaps, but until Krish claims otherwise, I'll still stick with nationalism as the motivating factor. No big deal though, that's why I put smiley at the end of that post.

Hands down, Carlsen and his hoodies are the height of chess fashion! Mig needs to hook him up with a Ninja hoodie.

Hey nice site you have. Anyways I just thought I’d chat about some new chess software I found lately. Its called Chess Analysis Pro 7000. Its very good in analyzing your chess games for blunders. It also track’s your chess ratings. I liked the little book that came with it too. Yes I’d recommend this item. Kasparov always analyzed his own games. found at www.chess-analysis.com.
