Someone in the comments recently asked for an update on the littlest (outside-the-womb) member of the family. (Her brother arrives next month.) She's getting big, as this picture from last Saturday attests. At 20 months she needed help getting up into the chair, but after that she had no trouble exploiting her opponent's kingside weaknesses to sac a bishop and rook for mate. Her opponent is a member of a local Brooklyn K-5 school club that was having a fundraiser at our local Barnes & Noble. They leafleted us outside and of course I couldn't resist stopping by. Especially when I saw the name of their club, the Chess Ninjas!
Since we're off topic, one for the "told you so" files. Kasparov went to Georgia for the big 50th birthday bash of his old friend and former second Zurab Azmaiparashvili yesterday. Azmai has plenty of Georgian political contacts, and, when they heard Kasparov was coming, there were rumors that President Saakashvili might even show up. (If there's anyone Putin hates more than Kasparov, it's Saakashvili, and of course the feeling is mutual.) A few days ago Garry joked about the rumors, saying that if this happened the news reports would say "President Saakashvili meets with Kasparov" and poor Azmaiparashvili's birthday wouldn't even be mentioned. Truth. (Well, okay, he was also invited to the presidential palace and residence...)
Pardon my ignorance, but how's the title of this post related to its content?
He hold the record for youngest GM ever. For now.
Springtime agrees with her.
She looks like she'll be a doctor when she grows up. (Don't ask me why I think that; I don't know.)
Lovely snapshot! , congrats.
Since Karjakin is mentioned , IMO tomorrow he has the last chance to prove that he is actually capable of stoping Carlsen every now and then , we need a decent nemesis for Magnus.
I have some faith on him ,at least i hope he wont go down 2-0 .
Ah, makes sense :). Thanks!
I like her willingness to move pieces forward, without overdue regard for King safety - a future Tal in the making.
Mig, that is a CUUUUUUUUUTE picture of your daughter, she looks so business like and matter of fact, which combined with her size makes for a picture for the ages! Good one!
Nothing is coincidental about Mig’s writing. The headline is a sly sleeper. My contact in Moscow has informed me that Karjakin's wife, Kateryna Dolzhikova, is pregnant. It's too early to be officially announced, though.
Remember: You read it first on The Daily Dirt.
So cute Mig! Love the way she is toying with the captured pieces. Kids are so great!
This picture is hilarious, Mig! From her angle of sight she must distinguish pieces purely by height.
Happy Paddy's Day to all!
She's very cute indeed. And if, as I suppose, there's an even littler inside-the-womb one, congratulations. Are you going to try to repeat the Polgar experiment and raise a whole family of grandmasters?
I was surprised to see that the incredibly adorable Miglette hasn't yet lost her hair.
There is cute and then there is CUTE! Thanks for sharing Mig; reminds us that there are things more important than chess. You and your wife are truly blessed.
A step closer to world domination...
Congrats on the upcoming arrival, Mig! That's fantastic news. Adorable daughter, too!
So cute! The boy she is playing looks suitably intimidated. :-)
It's great to keep up with Mig's growing family on this blog.
Is there any particular reason why Putin should hate Kasparov in the same league as Saaskishvilli? Putin has gone on record saying what he would like to do to the Georgian president, but I thought he merely dismissed Kasparov's election attempt.
Carlsen better enjoy his time at the top, la Miglette is on his heels! (Particularly, once she starts working with Garry.)
Congrats Mig on the lovely little miss and on your impending arrival!
Danailov is back to his usual stuff.

Dunno, I for one can't find anything pernicious in what he says there.
Seriously? "Of course they have a legal right to refuse, but in our personal opinion they show no respect to the organizers, the sponsors and the city of Sofia."???
Well, if he's telling the truth about their willingness to accede to Anand's wishes re the GM advisor etc, then I think he's got a point. If one refuses something on the grounds of a certain objection and then the grounds for the objection are removed and it is still refused without explanation, it is fair enough for the proposer to complain about it. It is a lot of money, too. And I'm no fan of D, I assure you. All this assumes that this side of the story is correct, maybe that's naive of me.
Btw, Carlsen better start toning down his performances, we want the prospective champ to look good! :)
Extraordinary interview with Ivanchuk at Chessbase - http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=6196
Very interesting person! Very well spoken. No wonder he's one of the best in the world, having trained by studying games of Alekhine and Botvinnik in the method described! Also, his passion for the game and the need to study and constantly improve one's self. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see him WC one day yet!
That is seriously cute, Mig. To bring the topic of babies together with Kasparov/Saakashvili topic:
La Miglette may be doing her best impression of Kasparov, but check out this girl's impression of Saakashvili:

Hey Mig,
Is that the Park Slope B&N?
After reading your blog for some time now, I decided to take my family and relocate to Brooklyn from the nether regions of the Midwest. (Getting a j.o.b. in the city also had something to do with it.) Any pointers on where to take my three year-old for chess-related kid fun? Thanks...
What is her age? My wife saw the picture and she doesn´t believe that she can play chess being so young! I told her, look, she is looking at the board and holding the pieces! That is not only a pose for the picture!
This little miggy went to chess club!...
Cool, I think she is wondering what her opponent is thinking. She looks very quiet and disciplined.
With apologies to the Miglette! :) While Kasparov was in Georgia he gave an interview - extratime.az claim it's the first to the Azerbaijan media in 20 years: http://www.extratime.az/article.php?aid=12550
He has some warm words about [ctrl+v], sorry Azmaiparashvili, who was his second for three world championship matches. He comments on the general strength of chess in the Caucasus. Asked about the chances of the young Azerbaijan players he says that Radjabov, Gashimov and Mamedyarov are all top 10 players, but that none of them has real championship potential.
Then he answers a lot of questions on Carlsen. He again says that Carlsen's vision and play is comparable to Karpov, and the opposite of Tal, Alekhine and himself.
A couple of fragments:
"Magnus' main problems were in positions where everything was beginning to "hang" and with purposeful opening preparation, exactly those areas where I was strongest".
"I repeat,it's not worth looking for complicated conspiracy theories, even if that's quite a natural human reaction. I found it interesting. I repeat, our cooperation has now been reduced to a minimum because Magnus is beginning to do everything independently. He has a database, he's learned a lot - he's learned the correct approach to working on openings. In any case it's clear that our cooperation was going to be for a limited time and couldn't continue indefinitely. But I'm ready to help out where necessary. For me, the arrival at the top in chess of a Western player who can be compared to Fischer is, in the current situation, a very important step towards attracting potential sponsors. But again, that wasn't my main aim. It seemed to me that I could assist in bringing about changes that were essential for chess. But the main thing was my own creative satisfaction. In the end I love chess, that love hasn't gone away and it was with great pleasure that I shared in Magnus' progress over the last year".
He's asked about media reports that he might be supporting Karpov for FIDE president, as the lesser of two evils, and responds:
"I don't think that in the current situation it's a choice of the lesser of two evils - in general that's not the kind of choice I like to make. For me, chess now finds itself in a disastrous situation because the path it's taken has led to a dead end. When I played Karpov we played in Moscow, New York, Paris, London, Barcelona, Seville... you can continue the list yourself. Now we have - Nalchik, Astrakhan, Khanty-Minsk, Elista... Such a situation strikes me as a total dead end and escaping from it without changing the chess leadership is impossible. [...]
Although the history of my relations with Karpov is, to put it diplomatically, contradictory, my sympathies and perhaps, in some variations, my assistance will be on his side."
He's asked about standing for FIDE president himself and sounds susceptible ("I hope that if I have the chance to offer direct help to chess then I won't shy away from it"). But he says that at the moment his involvement would make things too politicised.
Asked about Carlsen's chances to dominate at the top as he did he says the competition in all sports has increased dramatically and:
"In principle, if you take Magnus Carlsen, then he has the potential to be at the top for a long time. But this "long time" today means a much shorter span than the periods of domination in the past, if you talk about Botvinnik, Karpov or myself. Today if you can even for a few years, say five, be on top of the list of the planet's strongest chess players then it's a very great achievement for any player".
thx!
Thanks for the translation. You did it again, mishanp. You are the biggest asset of this blog, next to Mig!
Thanks - just to add a little on Karpov, who gives an interview here: http://www.izvestia.ru/sport/article3139830/
Kasparov said that it seemed to be a matter within the Russian chess federation for now, but Karpov mentions that other chess federations are willing to nominate him if Russia won't - with France having made a formal offer. When asked if he was surprised Kasparov seemed to be supporting him he said "not at all" - adding that a majority of leading GMs would vote for him, if they could vote...
A majority of leading GMs would vote for my dog instead of Kirsan .
BTW official site for the Anand-Topalov match is online now, here:
http://www.anand-topalov.com/
As expected, Topalov's biography on this homepage contains a few brilliancies:
"In September –October 2006 Topalov played Vladimir Kramnik in a twelve-game title unification match. The match was drawn at 6-6, but Topalov lost the tie-break 2.5-1.5."
[Formally correct, but can anybody explain to me why the following page gives the classical score - rated games only - as 6-5 in favor of Kramnik:
http://ratings.fide.com/tournament_report.phtml?event16=4581 ,:) ]
Next paragraph: "In January 2007, Topalov finished in joint first place (ahead of Kramnik, who finished 4th) at the Category 19 Corus Tournament along with Levon Aronian and Teimour Radjabov." [hmmmm, apparently 8.5/13 for Topalov vs. 8/13 for Kramnik to some extent invalidated the result of the WCh match!!?]
On Topa's match against Kamsky: "Vesko's victory was more than convincing - 4,5 : 2,5!" [sic regarding the exclamation mark, and he's repeatedly referred to as Vesko]
On the forthcoming match: "The match begins April 21st in Sofia and the two most powerful chess players on the planet. Vishvanatan Anand and Vesselin Topalov will stand against each other in the most expected chess event of the year." [never mind issues of English punctuation, but what is meant with 'powerful'? Maybe Carlsen would lose in boxing against those two players ...]
BTW, what's your dog's name Manu? Does it happen to be Silvio or Vesko?
It´s a she , named ¨Lana¨ but she answers to Tomasita when in heat.
:D
The voters asked me to ask you: will your dog be in heat when she stands for election? They need to know whom they are voting for.
Well , tell them that they are dealing with a very hot black lab retriver capable of barking at every corrupt politician on that organization.
Unless food is involved .
More important: Who will be on Manu's dog's team? Does Lana listen to, and obey orders from Manu? Would Manu be very open to any requests or suggestions from Danailov?
If so, at least those leading GMs signing letters of support for Kramnik during the Elista match wouldn't, or shouldn't support Lana's candidature!?
"Topalov's biography on this homepage contains a few brilliancies:
"In September –October 2006 Topalov played Vladimir Kramnik in a twelve-game title unification match. The match was drawn at 6-6, but Topalov lost the tie-break 2.5-1.5."

The match did end 6-6 (also according to Kramnik's home page, and of course FIDE), but forfeited games do not count for the rating of the players.
I know the official facts ... but at the very least, 6-6 wasn't the end of the match, in such a situation the tiebreak is part of the match.
To me, the entire tone suggests that whoever wrote the biography has a hard time acknowledging and accepting that Topalov lost the match and his WCh title - at least in combination with the very next somewhat suggestive paragraph: stating that Topalov won Corus ahead of Kramnik, but hiding the fact that "Vesko" was merely 0.5 points ahead of "Vlad". This would be OK in a biased-as-always Chessdom match preview, but IMO it's dubious for an official and supposedly neutral match homepage.
On the other hand, it doesn't really surprise me: the match organizers gave mixed statements on how neutral they actually are!? Kramnik's role in all of this is also unclear ... but in a previous match in Sofia (Topalov-Kamsky) a movie 'How Topalov was robbed in Elista' was shown in the press center.
Ah well, nothing like a bit of selectivity. Spassky is the guy who lost to Fischer and Kasparov is the guy who lost to Deep Blue, etc etc.
I'm sure Anand is ready for anything, such minutiae aren't going to bother him in the least.
Did anybody have a look at Chessbase's report on Azmai's birthday?
There were a couple of pictures of Kirsan there and he looked very ill to me, like if he was receiving cortisone treatment. Notice the round face.
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday, dear Dunderhead,
Happy Birthday to you.
